Withernsea’s landmark lighthouse is one of just a few that were built inland. It stands in the centre of town and rises 127ft (38m) high over the rooftops. The lighthouse is no longer active as it now houses as a museum to 1950s actress Kay Kendall who was born in the town.
A short drive to the south of the town brings visitors to the RAF Holmpton bunker and the Spurn Penisula.
The RAF Holmpton bunker is a fascinating place to visit plus its completely indoors, so it is great top visit no matter the weather. A simple bungalow hides the entrance to the underground nuclear bunker. Once you descend the stairs you then walk along a 120-metres tunnel, through the blast doors and then into a secret world of cold war defences.
The Spurn National Nature Reserve stretches along 3 miles and as little as 50 metres wide spit of shingle with unique plants, butterflies, seals, and many migrating birds. One of the UK’s top migrations watchpoints, spring and autumn proves to be an irresistible draw for bird watchers with bracing walks and panoramic sea views guaranteed all year round.
